1 Thessalonians 1 (ESV)

Greeting

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace.

The Thessalonians' Faith and Example

We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly[a] mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers[b]loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Footnotes:

  1. 1 Thessalonians 1:2 Or without ceasing
  2. 1 Thessalonians 1:4 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothersor to brothers and sisters

So as I was reading this last night, a thought occurred in reading verse 1. To the church of the San Antonians crossed my mind. And I wasn't being silly about it. However, it did put it more into perspective for me as one who claims to be a new creature in Christ. After reading pastor Blakey's entry, I will attest to his prayer(s). Especially in regards to the church. Thanking our Triune God for a shepherd who cares for the sheep. Thank you pastor Blakey. Thank you Father for the one true Shepherd, Jesus Christ your only begotten Son, who guides those who hear His voice and know and heed His call.

"The word of the Lord sounded forth from you." The Thessalonian church provides a great example and encouragement to all of us that we would be committed to seeing the word of the Lord sound forth from us. The Bible isn't just something for us to study at church it is something for us to proclaim to those outside the church so that they too might become followers of Jesus Christ. Praying that in the days to come we might be looking for, making, and taking advantage of every opportunity to sound forth the word of the Lord!

Verse 4 uses the word "brothers", but the footnote tells us it could mean either brothers or brothers & sisters. It is a privilege and a joy (to me) when I hear a fellow Christian refer to me as sister.
